From Eldora to Winchester

Last weekends World of Outlaw and USAC events at Eldora Speedway ended up being on the wet side. The Outlaw show on Friday night was plagued by rain but in the end mother nature cleared up enough and we were able to get it in. Jason Sides took the deserving victory. It was only his fourth career win and good to see him beat the big dogs. Here are a few photos from the Outlaws.

On Saturday the weather was much better for USAC, but in my opinion the track was too dry and fast. With a fast dry track the USAC didn't put on much of a show for the lead, but there was plenty of passing through the field. When the track is dry at Eldora the leader seems to runaway with the show and that was the case for much of the night. Brad Sweet picked the midget victory, Jerry Coons Jr took the Sprint feature, and Dave Darland took his fourth Silver Crown win at the Four Crown Nationals. Now it's on to Winchester Speedway Sunday for what looks to be the last pavement race in USAC history. Here are few photos from USAC at Eldora.

Preparing for Eldora

Since we last left you life around the office has been relatively calm. Which has been a welcome change. You can always tell when fall arrives and race seasons are winding down. Travel becomes less and less and your able to catch up on some lost sleep.

With the slowing down of the race season I'm finally able to have some free time and do some relaxing things such ride my motorcycles a bit more. For you motorcycle fans out there I took part in local charity poker run a few weekends ago called the Burn Dog Run, and posted up a few photos in the gallery. Be sure to check the burn outs.

This weekend is back to business, and back to work. Racing resumes. Lucky for me it's a close event but a dirty one. World of Outlaws and all three USAC National Series are at Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio for the Chevy 4-Crown Nationals. This will be my first time shooting a dirt oval event so it should be interesting.

I hope the weather holds out for it, it's not looking too good for Saturday night. I have attended more events this year that it has rained at least one day than any other year. I am sick photographing in the rain. Give me clear skies.

One a side note, a bit of good news came out of the Formula One paddock this week as they announced Canada is back on 2010 schedule with a GP in Montreal. I can't wait for June 2010 to be shooting F1 in Canada, hopefully I can get a gig for it.

Grand-Am Testing

Grand-Am Testing at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course went very well on Thursday. All the drivers, teams, officials, and IMS staff seemed to be pleased with the performance of the cars on the course.

The teams were scheduled to test on both configurations of the road course; the Formula 1 course in the morning and the MotoGP course in the afternoon, but after only running 15 minutes on the MotoGP course they reverted back to F1 course. Teams and drivers had decided the higher speed Formula 1 course suited the Grand-Am cars much better than the tight and narrow MotoGP section of the track.

When I asked several drivers how long of an event they would want at the speedway, all them echoed each other stating with Indy's historic racing history the event should be special. Most wanted a 12hour race starting in late afternoon and ending at night. A little over 1000 fans attended the test sesssion which was free to public and many of them echoed the drivers on the length of the event. The fans however had mixed reactions when it came to which course should be used as the mass majority I spoke with wanted the to see MotoGP course in action.

After attending the test and speaking with everyone involved, I can assure you this test was not just a publicity stunt and I am certain the Grand-Am series will be at the speedway in 2010. I also would suspect the event will be held in September after the MotoGP event or possibly in conjunction with the Brickyard 400 weekend.

We can only wait until Grand-Am officially announces their 2010 schedule in coming weeks, in meantime enjoy the photos from testing.

Off to Grand-Am Testing

After a full weekend of MotoGP action on the road course at Indianapolis Motor Speedway last weekend; I now see myself returning to the famed speedway on Thursday to capture the images of Grand-Am's trial run.

Grand-Am is testing Thursday morning on the Formula 1 course and in the afternoon the series will switch to the MotoGP course which uses the turn 1 complex of corners. I am looking forward to photographing and capturing the first images of the Grand-Am cars at Indianapolis. Seeing the series take to the track at the famed speedway for the first time is a great treat and I will be one of few who will get to witness it and photo it.

Stay tuned for the images to be posted to gallery later this week and I will post an update from the testing action when once I return.

Rossi Falls, Lorenzo Wins Indianapolis GP

MotoGP took the road course at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway this past weekend and produced a thrilling show for the American audience. The weekend started out with wet practice on Friday for 125cc, 250cc, and the MotoGP stars, but the skies cleared on Saturday produced beautiful weather for the rest of the weekend.

In the 125cc class Julian Simon took pole on Saturday with a lap time of 1’49.337 around the famous Brickyard. Simon was joined on the front row by Sandro Cortese, last year’s winner Nico Terol and last year’s pole winner Pol Espargaro. Nico Terol lead much of the race but in the end failed to achieve a podium finish as Pol Espargaro made a superb last lap run in which he held off Bradley Smith and Simone Corsi to take the victory. Espargaro’s victory at Indianapolis was the first of the 18-year-old Spaniard’s career. The younger brother of 250cc star and Pramac MotoGP fill-in Aleix Espargaro moved up to sixth in the championship standings with the Victory.

The 250cc qualifying produced an exciting final ten minutes as the pole position changed numerous times with French rider Mike di Meglio taking his first career 250cc pole. The front row comprised of championship leader Hiroshi Aoyama, 250cc World Champion and MotoGP bound Marco Simoncelli, and Hector Barbera in second, third, and fourth respectively. Simoncelli who placed third on the grid; had an outstanding performance by himself and his team after he crashed early in the session. Simoncelli put his practice and qualifying crashes behind him and turned his third place qualifying effort into a victory on Sunday. The Italian rider held off championship leader Hiroshi Aoyama, Alvaro Bautista, and pole winner Mike di Meglio. With Simoncelli’s victory in the first and last 250cc race at Indianapolis, he was able to keep his championship hopes alive.

When the MotoGP stars took the track they produced an exciting qualifying session and an unpredictable race. Honda’s Dani Pedrosa took pole for Sunday’s 28 lap main event around the 2.6 mile Indianapolis course with a time of 1’39.730. The Repsol Honda was joined on front row by the Fiat Yamaha teammates of Jorge Lorenzo and Valentino Rossi. The American’s fared well in qualifying with Colin Edwards firth despite a late session crash and former world champion Nicky Hayden in sixth.

Sunday’s main event started off relatively calm with no major incidents in front of 75,000 fans. Several riders went off course in turn 2 at the start but the riders keep the bikes upright. Dani Pedrosa jumped out on the start to an early lead, but crashed on lap four while leading. Pedrosa would return to the race and finish in tenth position. Pedrosa’s misfortune allowed Valentino Rossi to take command of the race with team mate Lorenzo close behind in second. Lorenzo would pass Rossi for lead and on lap nine Rossi lost the front end entering turn 2, crashing out and recording his first DNF of the year. Lorenzo who resigned with Yamaha for 2010 would not be challenged for the lead the rest of race and won 9.5 seconds over Alex de Angelis. San Carlo Honda rider de Angelis had a brilliant ride in which he recorded his first ever podium finish.

American Nicky Hayden turned his disappointing 2009 campaign on the Ducati around riding a brilliant race and finishing in third. Hayden had to hold off a hard charge late from Repsol Honda rider Andre Dovizioso. For Hayden and the American fans the podium finish was like a victory. Adding the stars and stripes to the front of the field was Hayden’s fellow American rider Colin Edwards on the Monster Energy Tech 3 Yamaha in fifth position.

The Victory for Lorenzo was important on a rare day when World Championship leader Rossi faltered. With Lorenzo’s win the point’s deficit dropped from 50 to just 25 points between the fellow Yamaha teammates. The series now heads to Italy and the Misano circuit on September 6 where Rossi hopes to extend his lead over Lorenzo on home turf.
